Sean Duffey of Somers Point paddles past historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

22.5-mile paddle around Absecon Island is Saturday, June 14, 2014

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Participants have begun registering for 7th annual Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation Paddle For a Cause as of Monday, March 10. The 22.5-mile paddle around Absecon Island on Saturday, June 14, requires participants to fundraise a minimum of $200 to enter the contest ending at Golden Nugget Marina. See for registration information.

Last year more than 100 people participated in the event and together with supports raised $50,000 to help support our mission. Brigantine’s Sven Peltonen took first place, and two Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation board members from Somers Point; Trustee Sean Duffey won second and President Paul Giunta took home third place in the World PaddleAssociation sanctioned men’s race division.

The course was designed by event-founder Mike May in 2008 to challenge paddlers with a difficult journey that translates the feeling of what a person faces when battling cancer. Participants can compete in either SUP or prone paddle boarding in either the 22.5-mile course or an 8-mile course. There will be two WPA-sanctioned races for 14-foot stand up paddleboards between and 12-foot 6-inch stand up paddleboard each divided between men’s and women’s division. Prizes will be awarded for other divisions as well. An open division welcomes outrigger canoes, race kayaks, surf skis and team SUP consisting of at least two but no more than six paddlers.  The event begins at 8 a.m. and an after party will begin at 4 p.m at The Deck at Golden Nugget Atlantic City.

New this year, anyone can become a virtual paddler for those who want to participate in the event without getting onto the water. Virtual paddlers are encouraged to raise $200 in sponsorships for the Paddle for a Cause and will receive an event T-shirt.  The Paddle For a Cause is a partner of the South Jersey SUP Cup.
